Period of time when human technology was at its peak. People lived luxurious lives, robots did most of the labor, and technology had advanced beyond imagination to the point where extraterrestrial travel was possible. Power Stones; the crystallized energy source, were created by scientists during this era and used to power nearly everything. During this time period, the Altair-01 Space Station set off into outer space with several crew members, including Ack and Lara (Portia) on board. Ack was eventually put into maintenance mode for 330 years, 2 months, and 17 days, during which a catastrophic world war ensued that brought the world into darkness, unbeknownst to him.

The Day of Calamity was a catastrophic event that engulfed the entire world in chaos, darkness, and disarray. Humans created technological weapons used for war and terror that caused mass destruction. In recorded history, continents were destroyed, cities were buried, and new forests and species were created as a result of the use of chemical and biological weapons. The human population became sparse, and AI machines could no longer be contained and controlled. The world was shrouded in deep clouds that shut out the sun, entering the Age of Darkness that would last for the next 200 years.Per Lucy's speech: After a calamity that befell the world 330 years ago, the world was shrouded in darkness and societies were disrupted, with only old ruins and damaged structures remaining from the old world.On Spring 5th 279, after all the onboard AIs turned on the human crew, a ship carrying blue algae to Geegle Corps' Under Lab 7 ended up on the surface after the ocean floor rose. They lost communication with HQ and all outside links. By Summer 3rd, all crew except the captain were presumed dead.

The Age of Darkness was the result of the war caused by humans and the use of dangerous technology. Vast numbers of humans lived underground, facing starvation, loneliness, civil war, and even mutant monsters that lurked in the tunnels. They were unable to grow anything on the surface due to the nuclear winter conditions. Industries shut down and most of the knowledge from the old world was lost. New countries were formed while underground, and new religions were born, including the Church of Light. The Church of Light predicted that a savior would appear and end the darkness, bringing the light back to the world. Some people started to venture into the old structures, or Ruins, that could still be accessed to "ruin dive" in search of working machinery and knowledge that they had lost. The Ruin Divers faced great danger and gained respect from the population. Alongside the Ruin Divers, Builders and Engineers who helped to put together and fix the old machines started to appear and, over time, the two professions started to overlap.As per Qi's explanations: In the first 50 years after the Day of Calamity, the surviving population was lucky to locate even one proper meal per day, resulting in desperate panic and constant tribe-like warfare over resources. In combination with the poor nutrition, poor hygiene, and lack of sunlight which led to various physical ailments and illnesses, the result was the lowest average life expectancy in human history.The records show humans first ran into the Gnawers around year 462, during the Age of Darkness. They were able to speak our language from the start, leading experts to believe that they were developed in a laboratory before the Day of Calamity.

He lived underground, somewhere around the current area of Ethea and would have begun his life as an underground dweller. When he was 3, he said 'If the sun really exists, I'm going to make it show itself! I promise!'. At 35, he succeeded.

Peach, at the age of 35, with his band of friends, went around Ethea punching holes in clouds with his cloud dispersal machine, bringing the sunshine back to the world and guiding humanity back to the Surface, allowing civilization to rebuild itself and marking the end of the Age of Darkness and the beginning of the current age.The anniversary of this event is celebrated yearly as the Day of the Bright Sun.It took around 30 years for the clouds to gradually thin and part. Most people started living above ground again during that time. Some kept their underground affiliations, like Seesai, Ethea, Barnarock, and Duvos. The followers of the Church of Light formed their own city-state in Meidi.

A caravan crossing the Eufaula Desert from Atara to Highwind stopped at a discovered oasis overnight. Martle, a young woman from the caravan, was fascinated by the environment and its abundance of water, plants, and wildlife, and decided to stay. Martle wanted to let every weary traveler going through the desert experience the pleasure she found in sleeping under the swaying shade of the whispering trees around the oasis, so she built a rest station called Hotel Sandrock; that’s how the city-state got its name.
Her and Mort were 21 years old.

1st War with Duvos
Duvos sought the resources in the Alliance territory and conquered Baja, Arcadia, and Mobius within only two years.
Formerly loose allies, Ethea and Barnarock rushed to help defend their borders, and together, their armies pushed back the invading forces at the city-state of Lucien, but only after Duvos had already conquered those territories.
Due to the superiority of their technological weapons, Duvos forces were able to destroy Baja in a single night.
The Alliance of Free Cities was formalized after those events.

SANDROCK'S GOLD RUSH START
Things started changing in Sandrock during the first war with Duvos, around the year 32: a mining company surveyed the area and discovered that Sandrock was lying right on top of an Old World metropolis full of useful relics and power stones. That’s when the ‘gold rush’ started.Between years 35-75 two parallel processes occur:✦ Economic boom: Massive influx of miners and fortune seekers extracting relics from the underground metropolis.
✦ Environmental decay: Progressive degradation begins immediately due to overexploitation - vegetation trampled, water resources squandered, wildlife displaced, constant machine noise, and persistent industrial haze.The game lore suggests the Gold Rush and the environmental decay weren't sequential events but parallel processes: Sandrock's environment was being destroyed because of the rush, not after it. The town experienced economic prosperity while simultaneously suffering ecological collapse, making it a classic case of unsustainable resource extraction that ultimately led to both economic and environmental ruin.

Unfortunatelly, it is not currently possible to know the exact dates of the Gold Rush nor to properly estimate when does it start and end. Mort explains in his quest 'Gone with the Wild' that a former neighbor, Dyson, believed Sandrock held countless hidden treasures and that one day one of his men fell in a hole and it turned out he was right. He also explains that people were leaving in Year 78 after the sandstorm incident in Year 74 and that the environmental issues had reached critical points. The Rush Era seems to be dying down from approximately Year 75. He also tells us that Lou, the Mayor of Sandrock at the time, 'Fought for this town for nearly forty years'.
The Alliance of Free Cities Treaty was officially signed, with Atara serving as stablished capital, formed by the following city-states: Atara, Highwind, Lucien, Portia, Sandrock, Tallsky, Vega 5, Walnut Groove and Doss.

Trans-desert railroad called Atara-Highwind Railway is build thanks to Highwind and Atara’s investments, connecting Sandrock to the broader Free Cities network via the Free City Rail Co. and delivering its resources across.
Environmental destruction accelerates once the railway opens, making resource extraction more efficient but also more destructive, all while Sandrock is still at its peak.

2nd Duvos-Alliance War
The Second Duvos-Alliance War was caused when Duvos tried to acquire resources from Lucien's territory. It ended in a stalemate, where neither of the parties was able to achieve victory, only thanks to the assistance of Vega 5's technological advancement. Russo and Gale fought in this war, with the former being wounded and saved by Gale during the Battle of Ishtar. Sam's father served in the war, making her passionate about joining the Civil Corps.
Remington also served, as part of Lucien's CC, until he got an arrow to the knee in a border conflict.

With the All Source AI under Ursula’s team control, the Rogue Knight unleashed an AI invasion upon Portia, hurled the Wishing Tree towards the Portia School, and destroyed Central Plaza's gate. However, thanks to the efforts of the Portia builder and the Civil Corps, the Rogue Knight and the All Source AI are defeated. The Rogue Knight fled the scene after being bested by Django. Aadit mysteriously leaves Portia, prompting his supposed, but not confirmed, connection to Duvos. Tensions between the Alliance and Duvos are starting again: the empire is now claiming the Orzu Ruins in Ethea.

Battle of Sandrock
Sandrock starts preparing for an inminent invasion and sends Haru and Ryan for help.Duvos invades Sandrock aiming to undermine the town's resilience and culminating the orchestrated covert operation to gather all the resources that they need in order to shift the power they hold in front of the Alliance and their border's neighbours. The infiltrated agents (Matilda and Pen) and the manipulated local figures (Yan, Mason and Miguel), come to light, as the player discovers the sabotaging of the water supply and the assasination of Howlett.In the aftermath, Burgess becomes the new minister and Wei arrives to take over his twin brother’s role as Guild Commissioner.
Matilda is sent to outerspace by Logan and the builder.

✦ As reported by Mei, a march has taken place outside the Office of the Alliance Council in Atara, where protesters, led by Mr. Gul, the leader of the Unionist party, expressed their anger at the inaction of the Council against Duvos aggression in Ethea. The Unionists, a recently formed activist group, are pushing for the full integration of all Free City states into one entity to better stand up to Duvos and demanding that the Alliance leadership reenforce the Northern Rangers near the duvosian border. Russo attends the march from the side lines.

Duvos has taken over the Orzu Ruins that Ethea also claims as their own, leading to a tense situation just north of the Alliance of Free Cities border in the Northern Eufaula region. In response, the Alliance has launched the Northern Development Plan, to move settlers into the area in hopes of establishing a new City State for a better defensive posture. Settlement 2 is one of the settlements in the area and will prove pivotal in the ongoing hostilities.When Peach and his band of friends went around Ethea punching holes in clouds some one hundred years ago, the cuesta ridge above your settlement was the southernmost territory they went to. After they used their miracle machine to dissipate the cloud layers in the area and the sun shined through once more after a couple centuries of darkness, one of his friends planted a peach seed at the top of the cuesta in celebration. After covering the seed with soil, that person said: “I hope this tree will grow up in forever sunshine...” “Uh, that’s not possible, it still gets dark at night.” Peach replied: “Hey, shut up and let me have a moment here!” But only the first sentence was remembered.

It's been two years since tensions at the Orzu Ruins exploded into open conflict between The Empire of Duvos and the Principality of Ethea. What all thought would be a long-term peace treaty signed between the two states three years ago lasted only a year. Although both states have been trying to keep the conflict local, it is having global implications.The Kingdom of Seesai has declared that any attack on Ethea beyond the Orzu region would draw it into the war. The Alliance of Free Cities, meanwhile, has been trying to stay neutral during this conflict, even after the events of Sandrock and Portia, much to the chagrin of most of its citizens. It has, however put pressure on both parties to lower the temperature. The result of this diplomacy is a potential meeting in the coming weeks between the Third Princess Corliss of Ethea and the Foreign Secretary Torkin of Duvos to discuss a ceasefire. Preparations have started in the Ethean capital but citizens on the streets are apprehensive and not expecting much.In the opinion of the reporter, the ceasefire is a delay tactic employed by Duvos for their next big move. Although Duvos now have de facto control over most of the Orzu Ruins, the Ethean military, backed by Seesai’s promise to defend Ethea proper, have continued their attacks on the Duvos army, putting them on the defensive. This low intensity has become a drain for Duvos, as their relic supplies are unable to maintain the replacement rate, leading to a potential long-term advantage for Ethea. However, as everyone knows, the Duvos Empire does not like to lose.After the events that happened in Sandrock and Portia, the Alliance Council creates new legislation on how to screen folks coming over from Meidi.
